CES 2018: LG showcases OLED’s full capabilities
At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), high-tech
companies and manufacturers are given the opportunity to showcase their latest
upcoming products and concepts, pushing the boundaries of bleeding edge
technology. It's only fitting, then, that LG Electronics opted to show off some
of the best-ever demonstrations of its flagship OLED technologies.
For CES, LG wowed attendees with its OLED Canyon, a mesmerizing
walkway that consists of over
246 LG Open Frame OLED displays. Audiences walked through the Canyon, which was
90 feet in length, flanked on both sides by hundreds
of concave and convex displays showing brilliant natural imagery, ranging from
waterfalls and caves to glaciers and seascapes. The rich, vibrant colors of the
OLED screens contributed to an unparalleled sense of immersion that had
audiences snapping photos at every turn.
Another one of LG’s incredible showcases was a 65-inch rollable
OLED display. While it's not the first time LG demonstrated the amazingly
flexible properties of OLED panels - in 2016, LG demoed a bendy 18-inch
prototype - it's the first time that the technology has been seen scaled up to
the size of a typical large TV. When unrolled, the huge 4K display featured all
the hallmarks of LG’s best OLED televisions, with incredible contrast and vivid
colors, but at the touch of a button, it retracted into its base until it was
completely out of sight, rolled up within. Other options included partly
descending into the base, switching from a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio to a 21:9
ultrawide, allowing you to view movies shot at cinematic aspect ratios without
any letterboxing. Another option caused the display to sink almost all the way
into the base, revealing only a small strip that displayed updates, controls,
and notifications.
While these technologies represent visions of the future that may
not be coming to your living room any time soon, LG had more up its sleeve for
current customers in the form of the LG Signature OLED W8, its latest flagship
TV. The W8 includes further enhancements to the display technology, along with
a whole host of new features that highlight it as one of the best TVs you can
buy. One feature is the integration of Google Assistant into the webOS Smart TV
platform, allowing you to use intuitive voice commands to control the W8,
search the Web, control IoT and smart home devices, and more. Another is the
inclusion of a 4.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar that provides incredible sound to match
any content that you can throw at it. The soundbar also serves as the input source
for the TV, and connects to it via a stunningly thin cable.
As other manufacturers enter the market with their own OLED
models, LG’s pioneering efforts and technological leadership in the field are
what allow it to stay on top. These and other demonstrations of LG’s OLED
technology truly cement LG’s status as the No. 1 OLED brand.
